I’m a writer and academic in the process of altering course and moving from English literature to psychology. It’s not as big a change as you might think! During my doctoral research, I thought a lot about works of art and literature which demand complex and contradictory visualisations – I’m interested in the mental processing of illusions and paradoxes, and in the disruption they cause to visual cognition. I hope I’ll find some continuity when I begin to investigate this from a scientific perspective!
I’ll be using my website to talk about the experience of making this change in an academic landscape that makes genuinely interdisciplinary work challenging. I’ll also reflect on my experience of learning to program in R and to carry out statistical analyses of data. Given my training in the humanities, I imagine I’ll venture into musings on the philosophy of computer science and mathematics as well.
